GFWC of Missouri 2017 Spring Convention Highlights

Check back soon for updated 2017 information

The GFWC of Missouri 122nd Annual Convention was held at the Ramada Oasis Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, MO, on May 2-5, 2017. 60 members were in attendance representing 29 clubs and all 9 districts. Several members took a tour on Wednesday afternoon of Fantastic Caverns, a drive-through cave explored in the late 1800’s by women. An ice cream social was held in the atrium to provide time for members to catch up with their GFWC friends from across the state.

Official business began with a short board meeting followed by the opening of the official convention. The local Sons of the American Revolution came dressed in period costumes to provide the flag ceremony and Springfield Mayor Ken McClure welcomed the group to the city of Springfield.

A variety of awards were presented to clubs and districts, district presidents or their representatives updated the membership on district activities, and updates were given on this past spring’s Sophomore Pilgrimage and Legislative Day. An amendment to the bylaws was passed to change the requirement for a quorum at convention from 25 clubs to 20% of Clubs in Active Membership. In addition, MVR President LaDonne Snavely invited everyone to the MVR Conference at Honey Creek Resort in Raspin, Iowa to be held September 21-24, 2017.

Information regarding our State Scholarship Program was shared. We are currently awarding scholarships once our donations reach $1,000. This year we accumulated enough to award a $1,000 Mental Health Nursing Scholarship to a student at the University of Missouri. The other scholarships and the amounts accumulated by May 1, 2017 are as follows: Art - $191, Forestry - $410, Music - $430, Music Therapy - $679, Native American Indian - $325, and Special Education - $503. We brainstormed ways to generate more funding for our scholarship program and began the “Dollars for Scholars” collection jars. We collected $181.50 from money collected in the jars during convention and an additional $160 from the silent auction baskets. These funds will be divided between the 7 scholarships.

We are also beginning a new fundraising program to raise money for GFWC Headquarters Capital Campaign Fund. Each club was able to pick up a large syringe just the right size to hold quarters and encouraged to use these to collect quarters at meetings throughout the year and then send a check in to State Treasurer Donna Calvin who will total all the funds and send a check to Headquarters from Missouri to support the Capital Campaign Fund.

Speakers included Regina Greer-Cooper, Director of Springfield/Greene County Library System, who informed us about funding in Missouri for public libraries at the ESO Luncheon. Gabriel Richenor from the Missouri Leadership Seminar shared a video of last year’s MLS weekend showing the highlights of activities with the students and shared additional information about MLS. WT Johnson talked about the Underground Railroad and the role Quilts played in transporting the slaves to Canada. He also talked about the Foster Grandparents Program.

Jenny Preiss, Missouri Girls Town Interim Director, and Melissa Blum, MGT Interim Assistant Director, shared updates on happenings at MGT and helped with MGT Awards.

We were entertained on Thursday from Tammy and Tonya Bilyeu from Ozarks Country, Grand Country Music Hall in Branson. Everyone came dressed in their western wear and enjoyed an evening of country singing. On Friday evening, Alex Burden, one of President Janet Ryan’s former students, dazzled us with his magic tricks.

Everyone enjoyed reconnecting with their GFWC friends and learning together. Thank you to everyone who attended the convention and to all who worked to make this convention successful.
